Johnson Family | Newborn Session Sneak Peek | Abilene Texas Photographer

“Why photography? What made you want to start a business?”

While working with so many families throughout the 2018 fall season, I got these questions time and time again. Taking on a business that commonly has a stigma of cultivating poor business ethics and ammature business mishaps is not an easy feat. Creating a high-end portrait business has taken many years, countless hours a week, plenty of mistakes to learn from, and more business and SEO classes that I can’t even begin to start counting. And trust me, I still work through mishaps every day. I took a huge leap of faith as I put aside degrees I worked hard for in the healthcare industry and start a new path. Each time I got started in a class, it started out with the same thing: “If you are reading this, chances are you want to start a photography business, but don’t know where to start. The first thing you want to do is determine what you want to focus on.”

What do I want to focus on? Well, my portrait hobby is nature photography… Let me just tell you, most people aren’t lining up at the doors, bringing you their brand new flowers for a whole portrait session. So even if I wasn’t getting to photograph beautiful florals for a living, I wanted to focus on something that was natural and beautiful. A relationship that was effortless and beautiful and authentic. People love seeing people. Social media is based on that concept. People want to feel relationships. They want to experience the emotions that were evoked to create the photograph. With those thoughts in mind, I began analyzing myself to determine what evoked the most emotion in my heart.

We had gone through a tough time trying to conceive. We had lost a baby and we were losing hope as we waited for the next time the little pink line showed up telling us we were pregnant. That was the darkest emotion we had experienced at 23 years old. And when we welcomed a tiny pink miracle, our first, into the world, it was the brightest day of our lives (second to marrying each other, of course). Who wouldn’t want to be apart of documenting one of the most incredible time for a family? I knew that was going to be the foundation of my business. So when I was asking myself, “what do I want to focus on,” I was able to answer very simply and confidently; Motherhood and newborn portraiture.

This session was exactly why I have a deep love for what I do. It’s when I see the joy and excitement spread across a momma’s face and I can feel what her heart feels, that I know I have done the job I set out to do. There was that moment, when this beautiful momma closed her eyes and her jaw clenched and I could feel that overwhelming feeling of tearful joy welling up in her throat. I see it time and time again. She can swallow that feeling and keep smiling through the session, but I know that feeling momma. Because I tear up watching you. Every single session I will tear up watching you.

And THAT is how I know I wanted to go into motherhood and newborn photography and that I am right where I am supposed to be.
